Fantastic performance by 1st Bangor today to keep their unbeaten run away from home going with a 2-0 win against a physical 18th Newtownabbey side.
With players returning from injury as well as some new signings, 1st Bangor have started to put together an exciting squad and it showed with today's performance.
With Michael Corkum out with an ankle injury picked up in the Ards game, Michael Paul and Dean Gordon still injured and Andy McLarnon unavailable, Tommy Elliott returned to partner captain Isaac Caldwell in the centre of defence with Matty Pollard and Mark Liddell either side of them. It was a solid and impressive performance by this back 4 and keeper John McIlveen which provided the foundation for 1st Bangor's win and gave 1st Bangor their first clean sheet of the season.
In front of them Colin Moore and Chris Scott in the centre midfield kept the midfield three of Newtownabbey occupied with some tough tackling and good linking up with 1st Bangor's front two of Croaker and Steven Cairnduff. It was this combination which led the first goal, Scott dispossessing 18th's Nixon and feeding Croaker who beat three 18th players for pace before calmly rounding the keeper and slotting home to round off a fantastic goal for the debutant.
Out wide Aaron Caldwell and new signing George Chelariu provided width, pace and skill which Newtownabbey simply couldn't deal with, and 1st Bangor were unlucky not to go further ahead in the first half when Caldwell rounded the keeper and squared to Croaker 10 yards out only for the hard surface to send the ball bobbling over Croaker as he shaped up to slot home.
In the second half, it was more of the same, with 1st Bangor restricting 18th to long range efforts and set pieces and continuing to look dangerous on the break with the pace of Croaker and Cairnduff giving 18th problems. Eventually it was this pace that opened up 18th for the second 1st Bangor goal, Croaker latching onto a ball over the top before cooling rolling the ball past the keeper and into the net for his and 1st Bangor's second. Late on saw the introduction of big Anto who caused 18th continual problems and 1st Bangor were unlucky not to make it 3-0 with Elliot's header being cleared off the line.
Overall it was an impressive hard-working and exciting performance which has left 1st Bangor well placed in the league.
